Overwatering

Definition: Overwatering means watering cannabis so often that the root zone never dries enough to let oxygen back in, rather than simply pouring too much water at once. Roots in soggy media suffocate, so leaves droop with a heavy, swollen look, growth slows, and the risk of root rot and fungus gnats climbs.

How Overwatering works

Most beginners overwater out of care. The plant looks a little sad, so they water again, and the problem deepens. The issue is frequency: soil needs a wet-dry cycle so air can refill the spaces water leaves behind.

Signs of overwatering

  • Leaves droop and curl downward but feel firm and plump, not papery.
  • The whole plant looks heavy, often within hours of watering.
  • The pot stays heavy for days, and the soil surface stays dark and wet.
  • Slow growth, yellowing, and gnats around the soil.

Compare these with underwatering, which also causes drooping but with limp, thin leaves and a light pot.

Common causes

  • A small plant in a very large pot, which holds far more water than the roots can use.
  • Pots without drainage holes, or saucers left full of runoff.
  • Dense mixes without enough perlite or other aeration.
  • Watering on a fixed calendar instead of by need.

Watering the right way

  • Pot-lift test: lift the pot right after watering and again when it’s dry. Water once it feels noticeably lighter.
  • Finger test: in soil, water when the top 1 to 2 inches are dry.
  • Water thoroughly: soak until about 10 to 20% runs out the bottom, then wait.
  • Seedlings: water a small circle around the stem rather than the whole pot.

Coco coir is the exception that proves the rule: it’s so airy that daily watering is normal. Persistent overwatering in soil is a leading cause of root rot.

Grower tipUse fabric pots if you tend to water too often, because they breathe through the sides and dry out faster than plastic.
